Lukas placed his hands on the bathroom counter, staring at his reflection in the mirror. The patter of the running shower water did nothing to calm the storm raging in his mind.

Angelo’s words from early in the day floated around in his head, refusing to leave.

The Oracle said Blaire was safe as long as she remained in the cell. How safe was that? Alive? Unharmed? What happened if they took her from the cell and moved her elsewhere? What if his actions earlier today influenced a decision that got Blaire removed from the cell and put into harm’s way?

He rubbed the heel of his palm against his solar plexus to push down the sharp pain that tightened his chest and made his heart race.

Unable to look at himself in the mirror any longer, he turned away and stripped out of his clothes. He sighed as he opened the shower stall and stepped under the hot spray of water.

How would he explain the latest development with Blaire to his parents?

Reasonably, Blaire’s decision to trade herself for him spoke of the love she felt for him, but the implication of what it meant still settled like a lead weight in his gut.

Everyone fucking leaves.

First, his parents when he was only five. Now her.

Time with those he loved and trusted was short-lived. He’d tried his hardest to convince Blaire to become a Vasirian—like him—to protect her, and keep her alive longer, but in the end, she walked away, leaving him much earlier than he could have ever guessed.

And it was all his fault.

This entire situation resulted from the actions he took at a council trial…

He breathed in deeply through his nose before dropping his head under the hot water spray.

His parents were going to be so disappointed. They’d blame him, and rightfully so. He didn’t want to give them an excuse to have a lower opinion of him. They barely held a connection in the first place. He didn’t want them to see him as a screw up who couldn’t hold onto his Korrena.

His stomach roiled, and he placed a hand against his skin over it.

It was all too much.

Months of this had taken its toll.

Lukas was too young to feel as old as this situation made him feel. His body ached. His sleep schedule was all over the place. On the surface, he’d accepted that Blaire was okay and everything would end smoothly, but a deep, dark sense of foreboding weighed heavily on him now.

He hadn’t felt Blaire recently when he went to the tree grove. He was lucky to feel something on the edge of his senses, but their already weak connection had diminished further. Something in his gut told him Blaire was in danger. This morning he finally snapped and approached the administration building.

Even without a sense of impending doom creeping into his thoughts, the time had become too long.
